加有润湿剂的碱洗溶液，依靠基板金属表面的润湿和铺展能力将油脂排除并使之剥离金属基板表面，然后被表面活性剂分子在溶液中形成的胶束包围而不致再沉积到金属基板表面上，增强清洗效果。絮凝剂则可加速皂化后的油脂在废水处理系统中的絮凝剂以便容易处理。
主要借助碱的化学作用，清除金属表面的油脂和轻微锈蚀。适用于黑色金属和不溶于碱液的金属，如钢铁、铸铁、镍等。碱洗溶液有溶解、皂化和水分解能力，依靠对动植物油类的皂化作用而使之溶解去除。形成的皂液可将不易皂化的油脂增溶于水中而离开金属表面。此外，一些碱洗溶液还加入润湿剂和絮凝剂等物质。
